TSI’s vision for pioneering floating communities involves more than just futuristic architecture and engineering. Bringing this vision to life requires navigating regulatory frameworks and a myriad of maritime laws. Our dreams of building innovative seastead structures rely on a team of experts establishing strong Classification Rules that ensure these vessels meet safety and legal standards.
Learn more about how classification works for ocean vessels and why The Seasteading Institute has focused on making classification work for seasteads:
Without proper Classification Rules, our designs could face scrutiny or barriers from navies, marine insurers and flagging authorities. That’s why we need your help to raise $400,000 by the end of 2024 to hire expert consultants to finalize comprehensive Classification Rules for seastead vessels.
We want seasteads to be safe for your grandmother to visit and to be protected from confiscation by territorial governments. This is where the important role of classification societies comes in. These independent organizations set the technical standards that determine whether ships and offshore structures are legal. Without certification from a trusted classification society, no insurer will provide essential maritime coverage. And no flag state will register a vessel.
This poses a challenge for unconventional seastead designs, since existing classification societies focus their rules on traditional ships and industrial production platforms. They have yet to establish standards tailored to modular, movable seasteads. That’s why your continued support is so important. Every contribution brings us closer to establishing Classification Rules that ensure the maritime industry’s stamp of approval.
