Once a month, we will host an online discussion on a topic related to seasteading.
The topic for our September meeting is: Carbon Removal with Pull to Refresh.
Pull To Refresh is a team that formed on the Clubhouse app in February to compete in the Elon Musk Carbon Removal XPRIZE. They spent the first few weeks as a team exhaustively researching and discussing all the various known methods of CO2 removal, including hosting dozens of multi-hour long Clubhouse rooms with expert guests. This led them to ultimately decide on growing Giant Bladder Kelp in the open ocean, where the water is very deep. Once kelp sinks to the seafloor at such depths, rather than decomposing, it fossilizes, sequestering carbon for hundreds, up to millions, of years.
Six months later, the team is nearly finished building a 20’ long, semi-autonomous, renewable-powered mini kelp forest deployment. So far, various component tests have proved very successful, giving them the confidence that the transporter can get to the open ocean, where a nutrient distribution system will facilitate growth that they hope to demonstrate is possible in otherwise nutrient-deprived waters.
Our guest speaker is Laurel Tincher, co-founder of the Pull to Refresh team.
Fueled by curiosity, Laurel’s attraction to emerging industries has inspired her to launch and work on projects in a broad range of sectors, including floating cities, gourmet food trucks, blockchain technology, genderless fashion, electronic music events, and new city developments. Laurel grew up in a small rural town in Silicon Valley, surrounded by both innovation and nature. That culture, combined with her family’s passion for craftsmanship and the arts, instilled a lifelong search for variety and creativity. She completed a B.A. in Cinematic Arts Production from USC in 2010 and is currently earning a Master’s in Sustainability at Hawaii Pacific University. She also holds a Certificate in Biomimicry Design from the Biomimicry Institute 3.8. Prior to co-founding Pull To Refresh, Laurel has worked as an executive managing teams internationally for over a decade.
