In order to return what had we borrowed to our succeeding generations we must able to conserve and preserve of what is remaining in our environment and in this earth. Everything on earth has been designed according to its purpose and to meet its goal. But the rising of the sea levels threaten low-lying nations around the world and there’s a huge percentage that many people might be a victim of this climate change.
The concept of floating cities may seem to be too futuristic before and can only be seen in science fiction movies but due to quick advancement of technology today, and thorough research of the other organizations and designers all over the world, it is now close to reality. It is designed to be a solution for the climate change and land scarcity and also become a way to generate more opportunities like employment and to guarantee the satisfactory surroundings for recreational and social activities for a better living. Spaces within the development should not be waste and should be design to its maximum potentials. By means of this manner every single coin consumed for this project would secure its worth.
Five Petals Concept
The five petals represent the city’s beauty, water, energy, materials, and equity. In the last decades, the ratio between the natural resources available and the population are not equal which raised the awareness of the community about the way the cities manages its resources to fulfill their needs. These floating cities emphasized that it is not just about creating a city life in the middle of the water but sustaining the needs of people that will live there. The importance of an urban green city influences the community and manifest of bringing back harmony to the earth but also stimulate economic conditions of the community and the equality of all living there. These concept offers an enticing form and be the strength for the furtherance of both the people and the community. It must tender a picture of unified urbanity and environment to magnetize the public to be concerned on their environment and to use the resources they have.
The five petals also serve as the five entries and exit points of the cities. The majority of the people should affluently gain access to the location of the development and easily discernible for them.
Environmental and Sustainable Design
The proposal advocates the promotion of green architecture. It incorporates innovations and technologies that is eco-friendly to meet the satisfaction of the target users without sacrificing the environs of the area, or without excessive use of electricity and water, and or without generating a number of wastes. The design concept depends on what the floating cities is about, its function and importance to its community and the world. The development is envisioned to be the paradigm which would shift sea into a city development area that both infrastructures and people would benefit from its advancement.
The proposed floating city involves a five petal modules that tessellate to create the entire infrastructure needed for a city on water. And as the development of the city arise, the community includes a transport system both water and land such as highways, bicycle lanes and walkways between buildings and other structures, to a floating low rise hotels and condominiums, residential areas, commercial zones such as banks, shops, restaurants and office buildings surrounds the vicinity. There will be primary schools up to universities and colleges proximate to the vicinity. It will develop world-class residential, commercial and cultural facilities – a self-sufficient, energy-efficient city.
Materials that are to be used in the construction of the structures are all sustainable. Fibre boards are being sandwiched by the cement walls together with the insulation and acoustic treatments which will reduce the weight of the structure at the same time meet the requirements to obtain a LEED design. It is a Green and Sustainable Construction Alternative offering superior performance and lower costs. CAF panel structural system easily substitute for traditional construction, including blocks, tilt wall. ICF’s poured in place concrete walls, steel and wood construction. It is a lightweight material and energy efficient that is sure to last long as the years passed by. Air-catcher living walls, roof gardens, and water harvesting system; Intelligent Buildings are also incorporated in the design such as High Volume Low speed fan, Programmed louvers, energy-generating revolving doors, angled w/ UV light protection and light shelf, are present in all the structures in the city.
The floating city also considers the internal and external traffic system, linking it within but also with the outside world. A cruise dock would be an integral feature of the city. It serves giant ships to small yacht that will allow new deliveries to be easily received by the city. Electric vehicles are the main means of transport on the floating city that will keep the whole city free from air pollution and congestion caused by automobiles.
The floating city will be powered by renewable energy such as solar and tidal; the structures comprise multiple ring-shaped landmasses with agricultural fields that terrace into a water-collecting center. The solar panels usually mounted above or on the upper side of the structures will generate electrical power by converting suns solar radiation into direct current electricity. These solar panels will also be stored energies in batteries and generators that would serve as an emergency system back up in case the sun is not shining.
Urban green open spaces would be located above the water’s surface that will create an image for the city; they become a meeting place, and a center for various activities that improve the physical and social environment. Farms, hatcheries and rubbish collection facilities would allow the community to produce its own food and sustainably dispose of waste. However, it is still interconnected with the public greenery system above and below the water,
All living spaces in the floating city have ocean scenery in all directions, and with convenient traffic connections within its radius, enjoying proximity to local facilities, services, public transport and gardens as well as additional supplies of new areas to satisfy the long-term demand for human habitable land. Noise, waste and other environmental impacts will be managed via innovative strategies.
The true essence of this proposal is not just to produce a city floating in water. The most important is the impact of the project to the improvement and advancement of the life of the people within the community and to be able to meet the long-term infrastructures and sustainable development need and bringing new opportunities’ to education, employment, business and social activities that eventually will foster a chain positive reaction to the whole society and its economy.
