Cure-o-Sea-ty

DESIGN CONCEPT

The name of the design comes from a mix of the words, “CURE”, “SEA-TY (CITY)”, and “CURIOSITY” The world currently has problems, whether it be economical, political, or environmental. However, as many as humanity’s problems are, I believe that there is a way to solve it. Following the concept of the sea that cleans and regenerates itself with its never-ending motions, we should design with the idea that we can regenerate ourselves no matter how bleak the future looks, and that we can cure with curiosity, as humanity is always learning new solutions.

DESIGN SOLUTIONS

Modularity

I chose the hexagonal shape because the shape has the best space utilization and therefore, best to adapting mixed varieties of building types, and it also easily connects to other communities.

Fluidity / Spaces for Interaction / Community Engagement

Wide halls and walkways, outer and inner ramps, seaside promenade, and many more open spaces were made for the residents’ interaction with each other to develop as a community.

Survivability

A breakwater surrounds the floating city to keep the city secure amidst stormy weather.

Sustainability / Energy efficiency

The following strategies were made to achieve sustainability and energy efficiency:

  • Green spaces in hallways for clean air ventilation; and in platforms, gardens fill the open space in which the community interacts
  • Utilizing energy harvesting technologies such as Solar Farms, Wind Turbines, Tidal Power Stations
  • Creating a dam for freshwater storage for the water supply, as well as a waterwheel for hydroelectricity
  • Using a kinetic façade that shades the structure accordingly to the direction of the sun
  • Creating urban farms and fish hatcheries, so that the residents will be both the producers and consumers of their own food.
  • Creating ponds that compose of algae farms, hydroponics, aquaculture, and hydrolysis
  • Constructing waste facilities that will sustainably dispose of its own waste through recycling and biomass

The City will be self-sufficient, aiming for zero carbon emission by integrating all of the renewable technologies, such as SOLAR FARMS, WIND TURBINES, TIDAL POWER STATIONS, BIOMASS, HYDROELECTRICTY, and many more. This factor does not only appeal to the Sustainability of the structure, but the Feasibility as well, since it will producing more energy than it will be set to consume.

This is a prototype of structures that are self-sustainable and energy-efficient to help the world look towards the future with optimism. Floating cities are the new wave of the future.
