High-frequency oceanographic data will aid seasteaders in deciding where to locate, which vessel or platform type to use, and what natural features of the ocean their venture might be able to exploit. Affordable methods of obtaining water depth, wave height, air temperature, current speed and wind conditions data are needed, as are creative ways of organizing and displaying the information to make it more easily digestible. Solutions to rare ocean events, such as rogue waves, are also needed, as are probability risk analyses of various ocean-related dangers.
Similarly to a business proposal, an investigation of potential marine and oceanographic research purposes aboard seasteads would also be particularly valuable. Oil rigs already house some researchers, sometimes after oil rigs are decommissioned.
