latest in cement uses LOTS less energy, and retasks mining slag too !February 22, 2012 at 3:05 pm #18865
and here is a link for a new way to glue natural surfaces together. Think it only dissolves with HydPeroxideFebruary 1, 2012 at 12:09 am #17722
Here is the wave shield. Can use tension tethers made out of the new, piezoelectric polymers.
This is the wave reduction layout, would give you lots of mooring points, and water desalination sites.
and here is the tether tech link- is posted over in the engineering section
This would give you protection, flexibility, and electricity, all in the same platform. Could also be easily extended, or opened for access. If the tops were domed, would give you desalination setups without using up deck space.January 31, 2012 at 11:53 pm #17719
Actually, if you are harvesting methane in the water column, or off the seafloor, you could use wave action to pump it down to CNG, and run your ships directly off that. No transport of diesel required.
Here is the model for the floating drydock- forward base.December 26, 2011 at 10:42 pm #16929
East siberian shelf is now melting at 10x faster than it was last year, and that is the stuff offshore in artic ocean. Permafrost stuff prob releasing even faster.
someone better figure out a way to make this happen

Anyone think the “temperature dependent” line in here could mean that the differential expansion alone could generate juice? Would be sweet if you could get both a static temp and a force generated flow out of it. ?
Would be extra sweet in orbit. Just wrap a satellite, and the stuff would chase its tail around the body.

oops, just posted this in the coral growth with electricity

Watch this cat, bill amasci has tried to examine many of his experiments, and has been denied access.
Also he has found hidden wires on some of his stuff. Many times the photos are angled very precisely to hide something.
Maybe this one is ok. Still, the energy to make anodes and cathodes is way over the candlepower you get out of it.
Much better going for nano-tower, full spectrum solar for distributed power.
also some good basic electricity stuff on bill’s site, and some true anomolies….

Methane/Nat Gas burns cleaner, with less CO2 than any other fuel other than hydrogen. Pretty low on the Nitous Oxide components compared to any other fuel too.
“Methane Hydrates are one of the methods nature has sequestered Carbon. Methane burned releases CO2, which, theoretically will increase the global warming, thereby reducing the stored Carbon,… Negative feedback cascade.”
Gotta have some kind of fuel source. Solar thermal is coming, but all the good solar electric is patented to levels beyond integrating all the good techonologies into a single panel. Most of the rest is “hand wavium” , so you must be a fan of nuclear?
CO2 is the least warming gas of all atmo gasses. and if we can figure out how to convert some of this methane direct to poly (like they are talking about with asteroid mining), we can sequester that into building materials, products, and possibly even hulls. (see the Catapillar 3D printing rig for concrete).
Hydrates are the greatest threat to humanity right now, above impact events, and even tho i think the volcanos are gonna start spewing soon, only global warming of the seas to melt the methane beds are ELE that we can do something about, since congress just cut space funding again.
All the latest studies show that extra Co2 is increasing leaf size, not food production. and the warming is redusicng the effectivness of the celluar machinery too, offsetting any increased gains in metabolism. This has been held back, just like all the other science showing adverse effects of warming, all the way down to the “Zone Map” used for planting areas in the US. Zone 3 has now moved up to Canada, and the tops of the mountains in the US.
Compared to what? This can be nearly passive. you really don’t want to chop into these beds until you have a mature tech to harvest this gas out of the water column let alone the easy, direct , gas. What other tech would take LESS energy/tools/manpower to harvest?
Have you seen what it takes to harvest methane out of even human waste? It is great at farm, or even small village scale. Not good for replacing petrol tho….
Human waste has to be cycled from light to dark, anerobic to aerobic. to get methane out cleanly. Is viable on a ‘stead, not really on a boat. Animal waste is better for harvesting, and for pollution control, but takes lots of sq footage.
Get your boots on, and those plastic gloves.
I do like the one way valve idea for liquid movement, may even be able to harness THAT for energy.

The other reason to start harvesting it

But the friction would motivate you to work on, and finish your own section, so you could “move out”, even it it was a reconfiguration.

the tubing they use for deep water treasure hunting / gold hunting might work.
The quicklaunch tubes must have a life expectancy of a couple hundred launches. was thinking of re-tasking them.

Another austrian school kid !
We need government to protect us from business, and to protect the commons.
Need a govt to provide courts and jails, cuz we can’t just kill someone for theivery (without checking for extenuating circumstances first)
We are now in 4 trillion dollars debt in the USA, and debt will equal GDP by halloween. That was caused directly by corporations and banking/finance. Had almost nothing to do with homeowners. ( they say it was .01% of people buying above their heads) The austerity measures and taxation coming due from that will enslave our entire country.
I would like to see a single instance of a natural rescource business that hasn’t hurt the biosphere, other than the oceanwater lithium harvesting. (no data on that)
Corporations were designed as charitable institutions, and shoud be outlawed for any other use. Greed is the second most dangerous vice, and a lust for power is the first.
“Voting with your dollars” should be our way of govt all right. Each person should get a digital allotment to vote/spend on projects of their choice – space travel, biodeisel, food aid, whatever. That is how tax money should be used.
We wouldn’t need to have ANY taxes if we didn’t have the Fed. If we instead had a Bank of the USA. The interest paid to the bank would be enough to cover ALL the expenses of the people ,except war.

I thought there were no fish out in the middle of the ocean, just transients. Unless you are near a seamount or other upwelling. i remember in the beginning here, we talked about seeding with iron to grow out the wildlife…..
The idea of mineral mining is good, but would just do ionics, lithium and magnesium , and maybe Platinum group metals. Almost all lithium is processed from seawater, and sitting over a hydro vent would prob be much higher percentage. Demand for lithium is going thru the roof…..
