The possibility seastaeding actually going to happen is quite big, I think. My interest in this field are more in the field of business and promotion. I am Dutch and would love to generate interest on business and technical universities and start competitions and such, laying the link with the dutch pioneering the winning of new land and their history of creating structures in the water. I am somewhat of a procrastinator though, so no promises. On the other hand I like work in groups so if there are other people wanting to start something here...

I would like to have some discussion on what kind of businesses are likely to survive or what kind would create interest to start a small business on seasteads, keeping in mind their "initial" small scale.

what are good ideas to generate profits and thereby attracting more and more people?

things that come to mind immediately (brainstorming here):
small casinos/poker rooms
farms (fish, shrimp, seaweed)
fishing
hotels
underwater sightseeing/ tourism
coffeeshops/ headshops/smartshops
dolfinarium
television program/station
private clinics
diving schools

Hi

Hi Joris,

Promotional work would definitely be a good thing. Teamwork as a weapon against procastrination sounds like a good idea to me also. What area do you live in? Im in Eschede during the week, and Amsterdam most weekends.

I am most of the time in

I am most of the time in Tilburg.
Promotion on universities is pretty hard (at least here in Tilburg) because of the overload of flyers and posters. On the other hand we are two now. If we can get it to ten is already a big success.
I am thinking about maybe creating short promotional movies or maybe doing something creative. I don't know yet. The key is getting people enthusiastic. Letting them feel the romance of pioneering, but at the same time showing how realistic it can be.

No, flyers wouldnt end up

No, flyers wouldnt end up attracting much attention i think.

Perhaps we could work together with www.studiumgenerale.nl/

Not sure how that works, i dont know if you can contribute an item or something. But if we could get on their promo train, that would be nice in any case.

Got something

For non-dutch speakers: they are an organisation that organizes lectures on all dutch universities. Generally well attended and with an existing promo network of flyers, posters and websites. Here is says that you can send suggestions to Peter Timmerman: that was what i was looking for, bingo.

How would we go about this? Just email him a link to the seasteading institute? I figure we can dress it up more cleverly. I figure we should be able to put forward someone who could give a talk on seasteading (i doubt patri himself would be willing to come over for ten seperate days to talk to 50-100 people at a time), put together a presentation based on Patris material, but perhaps translated and with some dutch specifics thrown in.

Not really my area of expertise though, ill refrain from spoiling our first impression for a few days till we get some more opinions / ideas.

The Dutch scene

Three already :) Seastead had some Dutch attention already in Metro magazine, Pamela Hemelrijk wrote a column about it http://www.meervrijheid.nl/?pagina=1003 but I guess we might get HP/De Tijd or Elsevier interested? Retired professor Frits Schoute may also be interested, he invented the "Ecoboot" which is essentially a Seastead (without the competing government-idea).

I live and work in Utrecht.

Yeah, ive run into that

Yeah, ive run into that article before. If you visit meervrijheid, i figure you are also libertarian-leaning then?

Getting a story in the media would indeed be nice. Too bad Croughs doesnt write for HP anymore, he would write about this. Hemelrijk doesnt write anymore either. Wynia at Elsevier shows some libertarian tendencies, but i think he only does dutch political commentary, not things like this. Do you have any concrete ideas how to go about getting a story in the media, whom to tip?

publicity

Hi Eelco,

There is a Dutch translation press release on MeerVrijheid now. http://www.meervrijheid.nl/index.php?pagina=1824 I'm working on more publicity. I'm libertarian yes, but long before that I liked the concept of living at sea as well.
Bye,
Joep

I figured that was you:

I figured that was you: solid translation, nice work!

Fantastic

AS I told in my introduction, it could be wise for the Dutch to move out to the sea, because building defense systems against the sea could be too expensive in future. I also live in the Netherlands and I am so happy to meet other Dutch people here.

One way to get revenues is to build pure knowledge development communities, with the best brains on earth. I described such a totalitarian knowledge economy already on one of my Dutch books ( in printed version chapter 46, page 373). Mail me if you want to read it or search with google for this quoted phrase to find this book on the webshop:

'Moord op allochtonen'

Ok, nice to meet so much Dutch people here.

bye

Whatever your vision on the

Whatever your vision on the future may be, i get a feeling a seastead wouldnt be the right place to try them. If it is totalitarian you are looking for, there is plenty of choice on land.

The key implication of dynamic geography is voluntary association. That is something you may want to keep in mind if you have any interest in starting a seasteading Community. Yes, that means you can dissociate from whomever you want to. And it means people could return you the favor just as easily.

Patent troll-A platform ?

I think he is misuing the word "totalitarian", and means an exclusive focus on technological research and invention.

In any case, it sounds a lot like the "patent troll" business model. I doubt it would work at all (plus I'm opposed to intellectual property in its current form).

Hey Dewanand.That's not a

Hey Dewanand.

That's not a bad idea at all. I guess there are a lot of smart educated people from countries like India very motivated to get ahead. Pity though you want to make it totalitarian.

Hey Dewanand, aren't you

Hey Dewanand, aren't you that Hindu racist Waldo Doerga?

http://kafka.antifa.net/doerga.htm

Piss off if you are.

If so we have the first person on board who could be labeled a terrorist. (He send fake antrax letters to hindus in name of al quaida to make them hate moslims as much as he does)
