Sorry, guys. When naming the topic I thought, "How would nemo name this" and was even half tempt to post a random list.
So here is my thought(only slightly more coherant than the list). The first few seasteaders will truly be pioneers and their lifestyle will reflect this. So I thought I'd ask if anyone had given any thought to durable materials to make clothing(that likely won't see too many wash cycles) that is sturdy, cormfortable, and generally suited to life on early seasteads. Denim is a given, I'd imagine. Hemp too, probably. It was used in excess on sailboats for centuries given its sturdy nature. Any thoughts?
Also hair for early steaders will be an issue. Hair shaven, close-cropped, or dreadlocked would likely be best.
Hope I'm not jumping the gun. For me its more an exercise in theory to get everyone thinking about not just engineering aspects but day to day life aspects that some of us will be dealing with.
Eye patch, peg leg,
Hemp is interesting with it´s many "dual uses" given our project.... if you get my drift. wink wink.
Well hemp with a high THC
Well hemp with a high THC content is usually unsuitable for durable clothing. Of course that is no reason not to have a bit of both worlds. After all, it would improve morale.
And I should have thought of the eyepatch :P
And I can see where having a survival suit handy would be popular. That and lifevests. Maybe we should start wearing lifevests everywhere we go so it becomes fashionable by the time the first deep ocean seastead is ready. "no, we aren't paranoid, we're just hip and with it"
The pirate eye patch explained
IIRC the eye patch for pirates was so they kept night vision in one eye, and could immediately see something when boarding a ship and sweeping the lower decks (where there was little to no light).
They tested this on
They tested this on Mythbusters, and sure enough it worked quite well. Safety-conscious seasteaders migh want to don patches as a defensive measure aginst pirates. I am only half kidding, if there was a pirate attack on a spar buoy and the power was cut, perhaps by the attackers, the inside of the spar would be very dark. Yes, you could use a flashlight but if you and your familys life depended on it you might want that extra edge. Obviously this would depend heavily on variables like the paranoia of the individual seasteader and the frequency of pirate attacks at the time and location.
Well, if they manage to get
Well, if they manage to get to the power plant, I'd think we'd have a bigger problem than having to shoot in the dark. Think bulletproof vests could be made trendy ?
Business Idea
Bulletproof lifevests, anyone? Maybe w/ pocket for night vision goggles...
and a perch for the parrot?
