Renting seastead prototype off Anguilla

I made some links to google maps to show what I think would be a good location for an early seastead about 3 miles off Anguilla. This location is somewhat protected so the seastead would not have to handle real open ocean conditions, so it could be a bit smaller. It is pretty with clear water and a reef nearby.

Low Cost Seastead

I just thought I would share my latest thoughts on low cost seasteads . As usual, the raw material is in the wiki so people can fix obvious problems. General discussion, seems to work better on a dedicated forum thread -- hence this post.

It should be no surprise to anybody that I am thinking in terms of a smallish truss-spar design. Read the wiki page for more detail. If anybody who is skilled with 3D modelers wants to try drawing the thing, I would be deeply indebted to you.

Casting concrete structures up from the sea floor

(1) Select a place where the ocean is about 1000 feet deep.

(2) Construct a steel cylinder 1000 feet in diameter and 30 feet high.

(3) Construct another steel cylinder 1020 feet in diameter and 30 feet high.

(4) Drop them down to the sea floor to form a doughnut shape.

(5) Pipe down concrete to cast a concrete cylinder.

(6) Jack the forms 20 feet higher, and pour again.

What does David Friedman think of the project?

Did David know about seasteading when he wrote Hidden Order? On page 203 he states that "There are a certain number of square miles on the surfaceof the earth; the number has not changed significantly in the past hundred thousand years, and, short of some massive redesign of the planet, will not change significantly in the next hundred thousand".

Is he ready to eat his words or does he not think seasteading is viable?

I don't know if I'm just missing the topic here or if it hasn't been broached before now. I am curious about placing ourselves at or above/below (50-100 nm) the Equator. I know about some of the good and some of the bad.

Good:  calm waters most year round; can build almost down to the water level without fear of being 'flooded out'; mostly out of the way of trade routes; good weather for both solar and wind turbines;

Later: ideas; Now: spamfighting

Hi all! I've had the Seasteading web site sitting open in a tab since someone passed me the link a few days ago, but what finally got me to register was that I noticed the wiki -- and that the last umpty-zillion edits seem to be spam.

Fighting wikispam in MediaWiki is something I do. I set up the spam filter for Larry Lessig's wiki and monitor it on a volunteer basis, and would be willing to do that for this wiki too -- or work with whoever has FTP access to the server to get the filter extension solved. (I also do MediaWiki customization up the wazoo.)

Desalination Technology

Does anybody know what the current state-of-the art for fresh water extraction is for sea going boats. For example, if you own an ocean going sail boat, is there some sort of reverse osmosis or vacuum desalination technology that you buy to help top off the fresh water tanks. How about for cargo ships? Do that just have large fresh water tanks that they fill up at port, or do they have some sea water to fresh water technology that they use. Are there off-the-shelf desalination solutions that can be purchased that are sized appropriate to a boat?

Renting seastead prototype off Anguilla

I made some links to google maps to show what I think would be a good location for an early seastead about 3 miles off Anguilla. This location is somewhat protected so the seastead would not have to handle real open ocean conditions, so it could be a bit smaller. It is pretty with clear water and a reef nearby.

Defense (Really Important)

Okay, i mean a seastead can basically be a considered a free state that has no ties to any of the currently existing worlds governments and so this raises some serious issues about the overall safety of a seastead community. The real issue that I have questions about is defense from currently existing world governments who decide to remove the potential "terrorist/criminal/god knows what else" threat that a seastead community might theoretically pose (a bunch of blarney if you ask me but hey people are by definition stupid and so the governments could probably get away with it).

(7) Repeat until you're several hundred feet above sea level.

(8) Pump out the water.

Scott Adams on Seasteading

I've written about this before, but it's interesting to see the technology coming together to make it feasible. The idea is that people will start living on barge-like boats and slowly motor or sail around the ocean to stay in the best weather.

working with "blender" to simulate "fluid dynamics" making a "numerical wave tank"

On Linux there is some free software called "blender" that can do really nice 3D simulations, including fluid dynamics. I don't know of any other free software that is closer to a numerical wave tank for visualizing results. Does anyone? For examples see:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=SMxfzil5_qU

http://youtube.com/watch?v=azuNHuj0cjo

(first I was not sure this was a simulation, but there are no bubbles)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Rv-ExKhhhZg

haha, nasty issue, but, I'm wondering if you can use human poop for anything. I think if this idea of Seasteading is going to be pursued, we should gather all the best green builders and engineers and see what they can come up with for using everything.

Windmills

Obivously wind power has its advantages and disadvantages. It's one of the least predictable forms of power generation, and does require some up-front capital cost, but it's efficient over the long term as at least a supplemental system. And I think vertical may be the way to go:

Create Legal Framework First

I believe that the first step in realistically creating a viable seastead should be to lobby a "host" nation to create some laws friendly to the physical embodiment of a seastead. I understand that the ultimate goal of most people interested in seasteading is to create an independent nation-state, but for a long time, perhaps decades or even centuries, any efforts will have to be undertaken under the protection of an existing country, whether it is under a flag of convenience or by permission of the nearest country or countries.

Legal problem with the whole seasteading concept

here's an explainination regarding the laws governing sea vessels:

"Second, while it is true that, under a customary rule of international law, “the high seas are open to all states, and no state may validly subject any part of them to its sovereignty”, the high seas are not a no man’s land. The general rule is that ships on the high seas are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction and authority of the state whose flag they fly."

...

the ocean in the sunlight can get quite humid as water evaporates in order to get large amounts of drinking water at sea Dehumidifiers can be employed

they suck humidity out of the air and turn it into water, they are cheap and could be easily used on a seastead

Seasteading options for Antarcticland

Seasteading options for Antarcticland are a good solution. The Antarcticland www.antarcticland.org is the oldest territorial domain of the Antarctic continent. It includes all the lands and islands in section extending from the South Pole to 60° S latitude between longitudes 90° W and 135° W, with a total area of 1.554.424, slightly less than the size of Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Switzerland all together.

Creative Capitalism on Profit-Maximizing Governments, Mobility and Taxes

Arnold Kling writes about profit-maximizing governments on Creative Capitalism:

Assume that the leader of a territory, whether the United States or Zimbabwe, is elected by shareholders, each of whom may or may not be a resident of the territory. In each territory, the leader would control fiscal policy, monetary policy, and regulations. She could set tax rates at whatever level she liked. Some of the tax revenues would be used to fund internal investments. However, the remainder would be disbursed as dividends to shareholders.

Shareholders would be looking to maximize their returns. If the leader engages in arbitrary confiscation, she may be able to pay a nice short-term dividend. However, such a policy will lower the society’s wealth and reduce future dividends. Shareholders would prefer a more farsighted policy. A leader who protects property rights and invests in public goods probably will generate a higher share price.

A poorly-run country, such as Zimbabwe, probably would be taken over by investors seeking to profit from a turnaround. These investors would buy up shares and install new management.

Side by side structure model testing

I should be getting a waterproof camera in a couple weeks.

I am thinking about making a few different designs each out of the same amount of PVC pipe so they are roughly cost equivalent. Then testing them in the ocean side by side.

First annual seasteading conference!

Tentatively planned for September in the SF Bay Area. Meet / hang out / brainstorm / present research. By that time we should have some physical models to show, at least pool sized.
