Not pretty but a seastead community that did nothing but create weapons could be a very successful venture.

Any seastead that wishes to become a nation will need the most fundamental thing that a nation needs…a national defense.

If the seastead starts out as a place to make weapons, then they may have the chance of surviving the early days of nationality.

Strategically, the best weapons would be naval weapons, ships, subs, etc. An island needs a navy above all else for defense.

Or, if not ships and subs, weapons that can stop ships and subs. A hub of research for anti-ship and anti-sub technology as well as anti-missile technology.

Though I do believe that trade and no entangling alliances is the key to peace, a small nation at sea is vulnerable to any third world dictator who has a few ships at their disposal who do not really care so much about trade and alliances.

what about floating industrial facilities like LNG facilities and floating brewery …. what about floating ship repair facilities like the valliant jetti and floating drydocks, what about a deep sea mining facility, a floating energy harvest facility, a aquaculture site – if we build a floating industrial site why start exactly with something that is a “problematic product” like weapons, that can only be traded under twisted and gray circumstances – bringing up tons of worms of all kind.

If we choose a product – to manufacture afloat – let it be a product that is part of the solution – not part of the problem …

Ellmer! Developing and manufacturing weapons and weapons systems is too expensive to even get in to and turn a profit. More to the point you can’t compete with the US, China, Russia etc., for that market. Even more to the point, the world is drowning in weapons now…

Because you would need a floating industrial facility…PLUS a weapons manufacturing facility. Or a weapons cache of some sort. Might as well manufacture it yourself as you grow and larger threats begin to “negotiate” with you.

    See: Republic of Minerva

Your seastead is all fine and dandy until a boat full of people will more weapons than you shows up.

While defense is important for the physical health of any organism,

there are a variety of methods of defense, of which weapons is but one.

In nature, most animals only have “weapons” in terms of teeth and claws, enough to catch prey, and fend off mating and territory challenges. Wheras they would never confront a large predator unless cornered.

Have to work to your advantage, for small groups with submersible capabilities, stealth is a natural defense mechanism. Having an immune system, or security checks of people and products entering or leaving the vessel is also vital.

To my knowledge in nature very few animals defend themselves with the use of projectiles.

Most common method underwater is avoidance, such as being fast and slippery, tail beating, prickly fins, and on occasion biting.

How they manage to “win” is by reproducing more bountifully than competitors.

In early succession generic creation wins, feminine,

in older growth specialization wins masculine,

of course balance is always benefical.

The cost of the machining equipment, power and space needed for them would make it almost impossible to did in a small seastead. I will buy my AKs, RPGs, 50 calis, and sniper rifles from the Ukraine or Georgia.

I have been in the Remington Arms Factory in Ilion NY it is hugh

If any thing build unmanned drone subs for patrol duty.
