| greyraven_r | I still believe that the best way to establish initial independance without undue harrassment is to be more usefull than harmful to your neighbors. If a seastead or micro-nations provides valuable goods and/or services to it’s sovereign neighbors, they might forgive it’s allusions of grandure. Land fills are overflowing everywhere, a waste reclaimation/recycling based industry could easily garner the support of the states and localities you receive waste materials from. The waste of others can be the natural resources of a manufactured “land”, Everything which is disposed of can be reclaimed as the raw materials for new manufacture. Amazing strides have been made in the efficient production of biofuels from cultivated algeas, which can be used “domestically” and/or exported for profit. Don’t underestimate the profit and endearment potential from “civilian contractor” based security and incarceration services to a friendly nations. A privateer navy flying under the flag of understaffed nation could in the pursuit of piracy enforcement endear you to many nations and corporations. Banking and web server services are not a good first line of defense, they have a tendancy of irritate the law enforcement agencies of sovereign nations, and should be minimized until sovereignty is achieved. These are but a few “safeties”, I’m sure many more have already been considered. |

| JLGARTIFICIALISLANDS | It is true that if a seastead becomes fully independent it will have to be peaceful to it’s “neighbors”. Althought if a seastead wants to be known it must do something that will get the attention of other nations. |

| lonewolf1221 | what about refugees? many people pay exorbitant amounts of money to get in to countries illegally in hopes of a better life, if seasteads were to charge a much smaller fee for citizenship, or perhaps X years of labour[ similar to a military return of services] they would be granted citizenship and a better life free for tyranny and poverty[ not that seasteads would be exactly luxurious to begin with!], also lost of countries have problems with asylum seekers and the like what if these countries could forward such people to seasteads , perhaps for a small free due to the stead dealing with the issue and not the country.? . Dealing with waste has been mentioned and I think dealing with prison population too. All are big issues for countries if they had somewhere to dump their problems then they would be happy to leave steads to their own devices. |
