    Hello all,

As has been recently announced, the plan is for me to go work as an engineer for TSI, so I thought id tell you a little bit more about that.

As for myself: I have a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering, and im crunching my way towards a masters in engineering fluid dynamincs at the moment. My tasks at TSI will include reviewing external contractors and grant applications, but I hope to be able to devote a lot of energy to small scale seastead design.

We know that large-scale ocean platforms are a technical/economical possibility, but we would like have something as small scale as possible, to facilitate incrementalism. Something that is affordable, safe and comfortable, preferably in as many ocean conditions as possible. Small boats do not really meet that list of criteria, but we should be able to do a lot better by designing something with living rather than travel in mind. Its not an easy problem though: the open ocean is by itself not very comfortable, and surviving worst case scenarios without billion dollar budgets hasnt been done before.

Yet I have some no-nonsense concrete-and-steel ideas of how to make that happen; something that is small scale (a small condo or even single family), does not require any futuristic materials or technology, should be afforable, and can start out small in shallow coastal waters, to bootstrap a community.

I hope to be able to tell you more about what i have in mind soon: when I start I plan on keeping you updated with a blog, to answer the why and how as clearly as possible to all of you. I know i havnt presented anything tangible yet, but If you feel like helping me pay my bills anyway, please donate!

Great development Eelco, I look forward to a productive stint for you with TSI. I have made a donation to this effort; so have a beer on me man!!

    Great, thanks a lot!

I am eager to tell you more about what you have donated to: that is constrained at the moment, by a years worth of work being due in a month, and the logicstics of moving to the other end of the globe after that, but ill be presenting my ideas at the conference. Which, if it is even half as awesome as it was last year, you should definitely come to.

When I will start working, I will document my/TSI’s engineering philosophy online here somewhere, and keep everyone updated with the state of affairs as they evolve, so that people may understand/criticise/contribute to what is going on.

We look forward to seeing your work in the months to come.

Remember, if you have any compartmentalized work you want to throw over the fence for some leg work there is an entire community of professionals out here who can work out the bits and pieces for your grand design.

Congratulations again Eelco! I hope you find a great place to live in the USA.

I remodeled a spare room for him, so he definitely has a great place to live :). Has it’s own balcony and everything.

Just wanted to clarify that Eelco’s duration of time with us (or at least, whether we can pay him) will depend on how successful we are at funding his project in the next couple months. I’m optimistic that we’ll be able to fund or mostly fund this project. I think we’ll get a significant number of donations at the conference (we’ll be featuring these projects, probably pass a hat after Eelco’s talk, for example), we may be able to reduce the budget given that I’m providing a free room, TSI may be willing to chip in some, and we will continue the fundraising drive while Eelco is working. Currently we are at 5%, you can see the progress here:

Absolutely. I certainly dont have all all the specialist knowledge to pull this off all by my own. I have various subproblems in mind, which id love for people with specialized knowledge to comment on.

Ill try to make the limits of my knowledge explicit, and point out where the help of others would be most effective.

Congratulations again Eelco! I hope you find a great place to live in the USA.

Thanks! Like patri said, that being taken care of, which im very happy with.
