    Greetings seasteading.org forum users:

We are going to temporarily shutdown the forums beginning on Friday, Dec 23. We hope to have the forums live again by the second week of January, 2012. This temporary halt is due to our website upgrade and migration.

We apologize in advance if this causes you any inconvenience, and we appreciate your understanding.

Thank you for your active participation in the forums and we look forward to providing you with this space to discuss your seasteading related ideas again shortly.

On behalf of The Seasteading Institute,
    Randy Hencken, Senior Director

You’ll be able to access the forum threads after the migration. Some of the formatting may not be what it was, but nothing should be lost.

I’m currently in discussion with the web development team and Randy to see if we can keep the forums available for read-only during the migration period.

FYI, I only found out about this around 30 hours ago.

One of the things that Randy didn’t mention is that the website is changing software, moving from Drupal to WordPress.

(I’m not familiar with WordPress so it’s going to be a learning experience.)

Because of this change, it is highly likely that Private Messages will NOT be migrated, so if you have anything in your Private Messages that you want to keep, you need to copy and paste it into a local document.

I was on a conference call earlier this evening with Randy and one of the developers. Originally the plan was to use the bbPress plugin for the forums. It is a plugin specifically for forums.

But we also discussed the possibility of the BuddyPress plugin, which provides more of a social networking functionality. I don’t know how well the current forums would migrate into that.

One of the things I didn’t think of during the call, but did later, and sent a followup email, is if we could use both plugins.

One of the capabilities we would get with BuddyPress is for private and hidden discussions, which would be very useful. BuddyPress also has Private Messages. I don’t know if bbPress has any of those things.

TSI will make the final decision of course, but if anyone has strong feelings one way or another, now is the time to speak up.

Because of the additional considerations, the shutdown of the forums MAY be postponed for a few days.

Watch here for updates, and once the forums are shut down, watch for new blog entries and comments added to existing blog entries in the Main Blog:

    A couple other things …

    1. Because we are switching software packages, there are going to be some formatting issues. There are Drupal tags that WordPress won’t recognize, so instead of some kind of formatting being applied to a block of text, you’ll actually see the tag.

This is something that everyone will just have to live with. The benefits of this migration will outweigh these little issues.

    2. It sounds like we’re going to go with my method of shutting down the forums, which is to remove security to create/update/delete forum threads and create/update comments. This will allow the forums to remain readable.

BUT … because of the sucky way that Drupal handles comment security, this will cut off ALL comments, including blog comments.

The only method of communication will be Private Messages. (One of the developers thought that we might lose PMs when we remove the forum security, but I’m pretty sure that won’t be true.)

If there are questions, you can PM me. I’ll respond back with a PM, or if it’s a question that other people might also have, I’ll respond back with a blog comment. (I don’t have authority to create/update blog posts, but I’ll be one of a couple of people who will be able to create/update comments.)

Due to the decision to go with BuddyPress rather than bbPress, the forum shutdown has been pushed back for approximately a week.

The web development team is laying out the revised timeline now that BuddyPress has been decided on.

Look for an official announcement Tuesday evening with a new forum thread and a new blog entry that will have the exact date and time of the shutdown.

Hmmm, I didn’t manage to get buddypress to work well on my system.

Based on Wikipedia’s comparison of forum software,

the one with the most full feature-set that is open-source is e107

I have one set up at http://forum.weyounet.info

Though I’d have to recommend Ellmer’s concrete-submarine forum for more Seasteading related discussion http://concretesubmarine.activeboard.com/

First, TSI has a professional web development company which is responsible for making sure that everything works properly.

Second, that Wikipedia page has bbPress, but not BuddyPress.

BuddyPress is an offshoot from bbPress but has been enhanced to include social networking features.

Third, I have no idea what software TSI considered or how they decided on WordPress.

When Randy contacted me on Monday about the need to shut down the forums, the decision was already made to use WordPress, with the bbPress plugin for the forums.

As a result of some of the subsequent discussion, TSI decided to go with the BuddyPress plugin rather than the bbPress plugin, so as to get the extra features for the user community.

I hope the forum will be a bit easier to navigate to after the change. I don’t have any trouble find it, but there seems to have been a big drop off in activity since forum topics moved off the front page. The forum may be populated by nuts, some of whom, myself included, don’t always know what they are talking about. Despite this it is a great way for potential seasteaders to network and get engaged. I think people are much more likely to donate or put effort into the cause if they feel connected to a community of like minded individuals enthusiastic about the cause.

    left my wallet on Enceladus.

Don’t look for an announcement because I haven’t heard back from the web development team.

    Hey All,

We’re postponing the forum shutdown, probably until Jan 2, 2012. We’ll let you know if that date changes.

    Thanks for your patience.
