Hi,
Happy New Year !
I guess one of the key research is -ocean thermal energy conversion- .
There is a concept; called the -Minto wheel-
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/MintoWheel/
.
.
This is a heat engine that works with very low temperature difference. I thought about a design that would give
propulsion for a boat using the temperature difference of seawater. Surface water is warmer than deep.
.
.
The Mithbusters built one that did not work well. Another person built a small one that works well.
I built a 4ft diameter wheel that works. There is a post from a person on youtube: israelift = that is a large wheel
and it works well. Most of these things are on youtube.
I would like to mention that this is a heat engine.
It converts heat energy to mechanical movement.
This is not an unconventional energy device.
The conventional laws of thermodynamics are fully enforced.

.
Sincerely;

ps: Thank you for your help Ken.
