I dont know if this topic has been discussed before or if there is a general consensus about “where” to put a seastead so I will comment a bit about it in the forms of open qustions, up for your feedback. Lets say we have a seastead. Its built, ready to go. Its mobile, seaworthy, modular, highly self sufficient, etc (all the goodies). We got capital, crew, food, fuel, set up for a variety of economical activities to make some money (turism, fishing, some food production, energy genarating, etc, etc). We are all set. Where do we go? One would want to go to South Pacific,…another to the Indian Ocean,…another to the Coral Sea,…Who will decide? How will decide? Vote? Now you might say,…it depends who owns the seastead. Correct. So,…who will own it? Well,…whoever’s got the cash to build it,..yeah? Is there a plan how to raise this cash? Or is it a one big wallet? Corporation? How do you plan to achive this goal? IS THERE A PLAN?
Different actors will have different ownership models. Corporations will own seastead factories. Collectives of people will own floating blocks of flats. Individuals will own independent seasteads. NGOs will have their seasteads. And so on and so forth. Let people build and own their own seasteads as they see fit. Central planning is bad. TSI should probably design seastead models that are suited for as many ownership models as possible.
I’d like to travel the world. See if my seastead would work in all the different conditions out there… I’d love to interact with different cultures and show people of all nations that there is another life available to them. Kind of like the old American saying, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Perhaps instead of choosing where to put a seastead we should agree on where to start and what route to take. Eventually, we’ll get there. Then we’ll have an arguement about where we want to go back to. Hopefully by then, we’ll see more seasteads out there and we can just “jump ship”.
There are two concepts that Seasteaders would have to take to heart: NIMBY and BANANA meaning, Not In My Back Yard and Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything! Dreams are great but you have to do it with your eyes wide open. Ignoring the reality that the Macro-Nations of the world WILL interfere with you if you are ‘there’ to be interfered with would be as costly as it would be foolish. On the site here I was looking at a report that showed the where a Seatead would/could/should be located. I can’t see to locate it now but it’s a no-brainer that it would be declared a ‘Hazard to Navigation’ and shut down as it was shown orbiting around in the well established sea-lanes between Hawaii and the West Coast!! Because no Macro-Nation/State wants anything that ‘they’ don’t have dictatorial control over in there ‘Back Yard’ (NIMBY), Seasteaders can’t put their Seastead ‘Anywhere Near Anything’ (BANANA).
