I don’t know if this is the right place to ask. But I wanted to ask a few questions of TSI.

Has TSI looked into the possibility of having an oil company lease one of their de-activated offshore platforms to a non-profit like TSI?

This seems like a logical place to start exploring the possibility of long term human habitation on off shore structures.. An offshore rig could be converted into a training camp for seasteaders and a lot of valuable research could be gathered in the process.

Cool idea!!! Plenty of de-activated rigs are out there! HOWEVER, there has to be a exclusivity that bars them from re-activating the rig prior to the end of the long-term leaser (other than emergency)… If the hole is leaking, they need to reseal it… Perhaps a start-up with Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture would make it profitable? Fish, Kelp, Oysters and Lobsters, to begin with… Parent it, then cut it loose, with a binding agreement on a percentage of all profits…

it is very possible that the idea looks “much less good” when you do the numbers – especially if you dig out a figure for minimum maintenance cost per year to keep the structure in shape and compare it to the maximum profit you can make with kelp and lobster fishing…those structures are so expensive to maintain that it is even a “dominating cost factor” when your business is “supply half of the country with expensive fossil fuel”… finance that with “kelp sales” does not look like a “rock solid business plan” … anybody can throw in some numbers ?…

IMTA isn’t “kelp sales” Fish, oyster and lobster are the ‘sales’ items. Kelp is to feed the oysters… Maintenance is maintenance. Any comparable size structure will come with a maintenance clause in the lease… Having the equipment to operate and maintain an IMTA on the scale of using an oil rig would have the equipment to do the inspections and repair for a large chunk of the needs of an oil rig. The lessor would still have to deal with any structural problems, like any ‘landlord.’ Paint and plaster would be the lessee’s responsibility.

I’m more interested in self sufficient communities then profitable enterprises. I believe we could have people out on these rigs right now doing research and actually learning about what it will take to build these communities.

Money could always be raised from donations, and “settlers” would have to chip in a fair chunk of change to stay on the rig.

My question was, if this was a priority at all for TSI or if it was even considered?
