Hello all, Thanks to all of you who provided feedback about our forums. I’m sorry that I didn’t have time to reply to all comments individually, but they were all read and considered. We did some analysis over the past week on our different options for upgrading. We think there are upgrades we can do to the Drupal forums that would massively improve their quality to a satisfactory level — Drupal forums have evolved a lot since the version of the code we’re running now. Staying on the Drupal forums also allows us to maintain strong functional and aesthetic integration with the rest of the website, and won’t require us to migrate or lose our data as switching to new software would. We’re going to try implementing Drupal upgrades over the next few weeks and check in with you to see how things are going. If the Drupal upgrades aren’t meeting our needs after a month or so, we’ll re-evaluate whether we should migrate to other software such as phpBB or vBulletin. If anybody is interested, gory details on our analysis are available here. Feedback is, of course, welcome. Our initial to-do list for upgrading the Drupal forms is copied into a followup post below. I’ve tried to populate it which everything mentioned in previous threads, but I may have missed some things. If there is anything you’d like to see added, please reply here. James Hogan |

Priority scale: 1=must have, 2=should have, 3=nice to have [jhogan: There were a number of comments in the forum referring to a plaintext vs. rich WYSISYGish editor, so I added them all to the list. But for the life of me, I only see the plaintext editor. What am I missing?] General: E-mail subscription functionality: Improved message editing: Unreproducable bug reports — please provide more details so we can fix them! |

I agree with your priority list, sounds good to me. |

ENTER bug reproducable with:
Edit: In your Google spreadsheet you write “Visual look and feel” for phpBB is “So-so (wouldn’t be integrated with TSI)”. This is not true, you can visually customize phpBB to make it look like the rest of the website. |

I’ve updated the FCKEditor version we use and I can’t reproduce this anymore. Is it working for you? |

That’s a good point, Christian, re: phpBB’s customizability. It would take more work, but we should be able to create a similar aesthetic if we need to go that way. Thanks for the research on the “ENTER” bug! I think Ben, our volunteer sysadmin/developer, has gotten a fix in — let us know if you are still seeing it. |

Hey all, I just wanted to provide you with a status update on our work to improve the forums. So far we’ve* implemented:
There are more improvements coming. Some of them are listed in the original post in this thread. Some are improvements to the items listed here — for example, we’d like to get the e-mail subscription links positioned next to the RSS subscription links for ease of use. We appreciate your patience. We’ve also done a push to recruit more website volunteers (which is of course tough during the holidays) — if you know of anyone who might be able to help, please send them to volunteer@seasteading.org. Feedback is appreciated. Thanks! James * And by “we” I really mean Ben Lavender / bhuga, who in addition to handling day-to-day sysadmin duties has probably spent dozens of hours doing the work outlined above, and research/prep work for much more. Thank you Ben!! |

Newline bug seems fixed in Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome. Latest versions as of today on Windows XP SP2. The forum should allow anonymous comments. Login is a barrier to entry detrimental to the level of participation. Lots of good input is probably wasted this way. I can try looking at some solutions to this if this is sanctioned from above (captcha or whatever). I don´t have extensive knowhow though but I can try my best. The website needs to be faster. It´s not excruciatingly slow, but almost. |

Thanks for the confirmation on the newline bug. That’s good to know. We’ve been getting a lot of spam user accounts created on the website despite the current captcha, so I think we need a better way of preventing that before allowing anonymous comments. Is anyone else seeing issues with website speed? I haven’t heard complaints on this in a while, and it seems OK to me, so I’m wondering if it’s something with the overseas connection between you and us. |

I’m really digging on the “Active Forum Topics” feature. It really saves time compared to scanning through all the forums and topics for dates newer than the last time I checked. A great add. Thank you. |

Thanks for the feedback, Thorizan! We’ll eventually get functionality to scan only unread posts (as opposed to all recent posts) but I’m glad this is a useful step! Ben / bhuga implemented it for us. |

Hey all, Just wanted to let you know we’ve contracted to Hell Design (who built our website) do implement the P1/P2 forum upgrades listed above. Our volunteer team (aka Ben The plan is still to upgrade the Drupal forums, as opposed to switching to phpBB/vBulletin, but I think we’ll be pleased with the results as long as they meet the requirements above. Part of the upgade will involve upgrading the entire site from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6. I imagine we’ll notice some other side benefits from that as well (and probably a few bumps as we migrate). We expect these changes to go up in the next 2-3 weeks. Thanks for all of your feedback and patience! |
