Imagine a school that taught “Computers for Entrepreneurs”. The focus would be teaching the practical software/systems part of “computer science” and how to do startups. It could wave tuition for good hackers if they agreed to give the school a cut in any startup equity they got in the next N years. The school would also try to help introduce rich potential investors to students looking for funding. If you left early to do a startup, and the school makes at least Y dollars on its cut, then you still get your degree even if you never finish the coursework.

This school is really in the business of starting new businesses. Starting new businesses can be very profitable. This would help grow the new country because many of the new companies would locate in the new country.

One great idea would involve something that gets shipped and processed on land before being shipped again, cut out the land in that equation and we are golden. They are already doing that with things like refining crude oil and processing king crab, you just need to find a product that has not hit it’s mark yet.

If that’s a profitable business, why would you do it on the ocean instead of cutting your costs down by doing it on land instead so you can make even more profits ? Now, if you were proposing a Diving school, or a Commercial Shipping / Navigation School, you’d be talking.

I suspect seasteading will mainly attract people with higher education, who can bear its elevated fixed costs and have skills that are easily outsourced. (starting an engineering firm with some people would be an obvious choice for me, for instance).

Combined with an open market for education, that would probably lead to many first class schools of all kinds developing over time. By offering education to foreign students, quite some employment opportunities would be generated. Although things like that will probably take deccades to get going.

There’s certainly a lot of money to be made in constructing, maintaining, and providing services to second homes at sea. An archipelago of mansions would support many thousands of workers in its vicinity.

There is a medical school on Saba (island 30 miles south-west of Anguilla – http://www.saba.edu) that seems to drive a large portion of the economy of that island. So it is sort of like that. Here are are some of the advantages:

    1. Can easily hire teachers, administrators, staff, from any country – reduces costs
    2. Can easily accept students from any country – no difficulty getting student visas no matter where they are from
    3. School is tax free – keeping all the profits makes for a higher return on investment
    4. Any startups in new country will also have the ease of hiring employee and tax advantages. In the US you can have lots of employees to choose from but high taxes. In tax-free countries you have a tax advantge but there are not so many hackers and permission to bring in more is non-trivial or costly. Here you have both ease of hiring and tax free advantages.
    5. The startups that stay in the country will have bigger returns for the school, being tax free.

These advantages sound correct to me. But I don´t know if they are unique to schools. I think most businesses could benefit from these factors.

Students are particularly portable though. Most students don’t have houses, wives, etc that might keep them from moving to an offshore school for 4 years. So getting customers is easier than for many types of businesses. Students need food, places to sleep, entertainment, etc so it can be an anchor-tennant that drives other parts of an economy. It is also a kind of business that guys who made many millions on computer startups might be inclined to fund.

In addition, a school is probably less likely to be bombed by an aggressive developed country.

It seems there is a correlation between being a good hacker, being a libertarian, and liking the idea of living on a floating country. So at least some of the type of students the school wants might actually prefer to live on a floating country. Yet another comparitive advantage.
