Here’s an interesting way to lay claim to a part of the sea and prevent a mauritius/tonga annexation:

1) Go to the location you wish to claim(Obviously, this must be OUTSIDE their established EEZ)

2) Radio the potentially problematic country,

3) Explain that you’ve been hailed by a vessel claiming to be of their navy, asked to power down engines/ lower said, and told to hand pay border fees of an exorbitant amount. Ask if you are in their EEZ.

4) Have them explicitly state that you are NOT within their waters.

5) Record the conversation and bam! You have evidence.

Great! And what will that evidence change with the criminals that are attempting to hijack you?

I think he means that later, if that other country tries to claim you are sitting in their sovereign territory, you have evidence that they knew you were in international waters all along. You are getting them to cede claim to your location.

But I also agree that this evidence will do little good as a defense if that nation sends a boatload of criminals and thugs ala Tonga. It will just help in any international court or in the media.

To be completely realistic with you, should the country in question send thugs and criminals, you could legally get away with shooting them. Also, see Hutt River

Damn skippy. Plenty of video cameras to record the event, including the multiple attempts by the seastead to wave them off and solve the situation peacefully. But defend the place if we must…I certainly don’t plan on another Minerva.
