| libertariandoc | SOSUS was able to localize the location of the USS Thresher…. from the other side of the Atlantic basin. Think a large, slow-moving seastead would be a challenge? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I won’t be wronged. I won’t be insulted. I won’t be laid a-hand on. I don’t do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. |

| billswift | My point was actually that concealment as a protective method isn’t very useful in the open sea, so to the extent that you’re right you are actually strengthening my point anyway. But it isn’t longer ranged, visual and radar both work from orbit, especially if you’re talking about US capabilities. |

OK, Unless there are some radar or visual satellites in high orbit (like the GPS constellation, at 12K miles, or geosync at 24K miles) sonar still has it beat, for a very simple reason: It’s far easier to transmit energy through a liquid or solid than air or space. Both the Lacrosse and KH projects are relatively low altitude orbiters, the Lacrosse at around 450 miles. For technical reasons, it’s better to have visual imagers closer to the target, to get better resolution. Likewise the various types of radar including SAR, the further away you are the bigger the problem of beam scattering and the more power you need. Even bigger antennas don’t overcome these issues, and there are solid limitations caused by the size of the launch vehicles that apply to spy satellites. Having a visual or radar sat in a high orbit is counterproductive. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I won’t be wronged. I won’t be insulted. I won’t be laid a-hand on. | cthulhujunior | Just live entirely off of eggs, cabbage, and huge reserves of Spam. Then pirates and government agents won’t come anywhere NEAR your boat. |

| i_is_j_smith | So it looks like all you need to stop a pirate attack are some trained, armed guards on board. Who woulda thunk it? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091118/ap_on_re_af/piracy And there are still people saying it’s a bad idea to have armed guards on board. Well, after this event I doubt you will find a ship anywhere in that area without a few pistols or shotguns lying around. |

| greyraven_r | I posted a related topic “big guns” in the Philosophy and Law section of the forum, not sure if I should move it. |

| J.L.-Frusha | Personally, I want my own space… I’m the backwoods-farmer type. I am also ex-military, have weapons and know how to use them. My boys are slowly learning, wife was the live-fire person, sighting in weapons for a gun shop… We like to go to town, but we don’t go just to kill time. We’ll have a free-floating homestead, someday, Gods willing. Being on the fringe of a floating city, we’ll be an outpost, one way, or another. Worse than pirates are the drug-runners and slavers. I’ll be ready, before they decide to sniff around, to do serious damage to, or attempt to take my place. Bet on it. We’ll welcome traders, neighbors, friends and family. We’ll be easy going, until folks get pushy. I’ve fired on punks that had nothing better to do than steal my stuff, which they promptly quit doing… An armed and ready response is not what these creeps are expecting. They want to walk in and own the place, without any harm to their precious hides. Being neighborly and polite costs nothing. Being ready for a fight that never comes, costs very little, after the stuff is bought. The 5-P’s are hard to beat: Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Now, that spot between the docking-rubbers just might be a shaped-charge. Every time someone goes out in a boat, they’ll be armed. My wet-sub can out run those frogs and it’s armed, too. I’d say that my idea for a floating breakwater should cause torpoedoes to pop their load… A floating perimeter of calcified wire mesh, aka seacrete… An emergency warning network is a good idea. Make sure there’re several panic-buttons around the place and a protocal for shutting it off and responding to it, in case it’s a malfunction, otherwise, the best response is “Get here ASAP. Be ready for anything.” We won’t mind folks showing-up, just don’t be offended, while we put the weapons away… |

| SailorTrash | I like the mindset, JL. And I know where to come visit if i think I have pirates sniffing around. http://seagypsies-mikeandkatie.blogspot.com/ Taking our cue from the Eskimos, we boat people have over 30 words for “leak.” |
