A number of people suggested that we host the conference and Ephemerisle earlier in the year — perhaps in the summer, rather than October. I wanted to see what feedback y’all had on this…
Off the top of my head:
Advantages for July:
- Easier for most students to attend
- Ephemerisle gets to happen 1-2 months before Burning Man, instead of after
– Easier to get participation at Ephemerisle (many BM attendees are burned out after the event)
– Easier for TSI staff to plan (many of us attend Burning Man)
- No schedule conflict with Singularity Summit
Advantages for October:
- Keeps consistent 1-year cycle between events
- Will give us more organizational progress to discuss at the conference next year
- Will give us time to plan a much larger and more challenging Ephemerisle next year
- Ephemerisle will be a more pleasant temperature (the summer gets HOT on the delta)
- Ephemerisle will be cheaper (boat rental prices are higher in the summer)
- Ephemerisle will be safer (summer is peak boating season, so fewer people on the water makes for a more controllable environment — safer, less risk of law enforcement involvement, etc.)
What other considerations am I missing?

Looks like you considered all of the considerations.
I would suggest having another poll for next year’s conference/ephemerisle, like last years. I have preferences for this but there are some of us that would prefer the event work around the timeframes that work for the most people. I’d like to see the events succeed more than I’d like to see it work for me personally. I know that I’ll make the effort to show up in any case.

It looks like the 15th through the 24th is probably the only block of time that makes sense… all other surrounding weekends are too close to Burning Man, too close to the holidays, don’t have good moonlight (for Ephemerisle), or have a conflict with the Burning Man decompression (a weekend after-party). Waiting to hear when they are targeting the Singularity Summit for, though…

Oh, sorry, October. Further planning looks like July isn’t going to be very practical this year.
