made a video with the boat floating and the bunny :-D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShAJ_zBsr1Q

    didn’t have any metal mesh handy, so just used a sand-mold, 10 * 30 * 40 cm

since it’s not a rectangle, but more like a pyramid, displacement is divided by 3 ideally displacing about 4kg

used 1lt of concrete 1/2 sand 1/2 cement, 3/10 water, probably weighing about 2.5 kg, didn’t quite get rims to the bottom, though would have been optimal.

waited 3 days for it to dry and hand-scraped out the sand, tested it in bathtub, it floats! :-)

worked so well, decided to do it with bunny on board :-).

    Seasteadding Cuteness! :D *hugs*

btw was gonna put this in structure-design but permission was denied :-|

next time, will probably aim to have a higher freeboard, with a deeper hull.

Pretty cool. Good work. What are the dimensions?

    It’s nothing against you.

They’ve done the forum reorganization that was mentioned a while back. Structure Designs is one of the forums that were removed from active use. They are in the Archive group and are read-only. The Engineering forum in the Research group is the replacement for Structure Designs, Infrastructure, and the other engineering-oriented forums.

Bunny looks a bit,.. confused? He might develop a life lasting aquaphobia. I wonder what PETA would say about this experiment,… :)

Poor domesticated bunny: utterly unfit to survive in the wild. No self-respecting jack-rabbit would be caught dead on that thing.lol;)

it’s like the 3rd line of the original post, 10*30*40cm,

border is a bit uneven so it’s only 9cm high in some places.

he was sleeping when I picked him up,

so was probably trying to find a way back to the nest.

In any case, it was a good test of the stability of the craft.

Even though it has 0 keel, it can still withstand a bunny rocking the boat.

He might develop a life lasting aquaphobia.

actually seems to like boats now,

ate some of a paper origami boat I had made earlier. :-)

I wonder what PETA would say about this experiment,… :)

    I’m vegan btw. :-).

they still make good plant-fertilizer from their poo.

due to small size they can be kept on a boat,

and there smaller jaws means some fabrics can withstand their chewing.

No self-respecting jack-rabbit would be caught dead on that thing.lol;)

hares jump very quickly, and have never been successfully domesticated.

however dead animals would certainly be a morbid experiment,

as they could easily be replaced with a rock.

the living bunny however simulated wave-action.

    LOL.

It is a great experiment. What’s next?

now, increased internal volume by adding more sand to mold, also with keel for sailing.

using a double-keel shape, so could be used for beaching or ice-sleding.

With golden-ratio proprotions it seems somewhat like a fertility symbol.

Lol, ya, so covered fertility-boat sand-mold in concrete,

about 1.6lt of it, weighing about 3.84 lt, I took off some of the excess and made a second model you can see on the right.
at 10*30*40cm displacing at least 4lt, so should float hopefully…

    ———-

did that a few days ago,

still waiting for it to dry, top is dry, a light-gray color

but borders are still dark-gray indicating they aren’t yet stable.

    ,

here are some pics of the bunny boat shell that is fully cleaned and dry, it floats somewhat higher now than it used to in original video.

I did some more trials with bunnies,

it seems like the bow doesn’t have sufficient boyancy.

Though the boat can float 1.7 kg baking soda that I put in there.

So I decided to make a tripod style boat, however ended with a rounded flattie,

I was applying the cement but it kept flaking off into pieces,

at first I thought it was due to steep angle,

so I took off the tripod legs.

but it seems it’s that model sand wasn’t sufficiently saturated with water.

Before now I had been using wet river sand,

but today got some dry sand from beach.

I had to use several time the amount of water, several times,

it kept getting drained out of the cement and the cement would flake,

so I had to remix the cement adding more water each time.

    I’m considering getting thicker gloves,

as my left index and forefinger got a little raw,

and the gloves seem to be changing color.

Note that if it is well saturated, this is also beneficial for curing the cement,

as it evaporates into the shell structure, and it doesn’t require external soaking,

though potentially may stlll benefit if it’s a particularly dry or arid area…

On the bright side, I’m fairly certain this one has enough bow depth to be stable for bunny test.

    working on a 30lt mold, dimensions 30*40*70cm,

It’ll be able to lift about 10-15 kilograms.

it’ll be another bucket of sand or two,

before I have enough to complete it.

based on my current projections, I’ll be able to make a 6ft dinghy (70*110*180) for $15-$30 worth of cement.

that’s the only cost, since labour is free, and I’m doing it on a river-bank can paddle it downstream to the lake.

Well might also have to pay for some larger buckets, thicker gloves… might be total of $50.

Biggest issue, it’ll probably be half a cenitmeter thick, so about 60kg, as much as I weigh,

Seems like there are at least 2 portages on the way down the river,

though there might be places to get the boat hauled out before then.

well I looked and it’ll displace bit less than half a ton,

safely floating 200 kilo, so could have a friend ride with me.

alternatively we might be able to carry it over to pond….

if we get it to an accessible location,

could likely sell it for $250-500.

Perhaps I might have to make it unsinkable to sell it,

with some foam displacers encased in concrete,

    assuming it weighs about 60kg,

    50*50*50cm should suffice.

    can be seats and bow.

I think this is a great idea. i wish I had some property on the water so I could make some models and play around with different designs. Unfortunately, where I am land is insane, but some day.

Well I own 0 land officially speaking.

Technically am renting the apartment I reside in.

Building a boat can give me some actually owned “land” or residence.

So far I’ve been testing the models in my bathtub,

though the larger ones am planning on testing in nearby park.

Do you have any parks with water near where you live?

Could also move near some parks,

    my parents live near power-lines,

I magic-spell cast for river and pond wilderness area,

and events took place to move me to where I am now.

My only roomate is my female partner.

I figure if she’s okay with it must be alright.

Anyhow my mom was obsessed with cleaning, probably still is,

Seeing how far it got her, she can’t cook, sew or any other ability, I largely see cleaning as a waste of time.

Honestly, it was actually rather hurtful as my brain regions for keeping track of stuff underdeveloped, since my mom was always cleaning things. remembering where something was, became useless, since it would never be where I left it, since it would have to be “cleaned”.

I see lawn mowing as abhorrent to nature and the environment, destroying habitat and scenery.

It is much better to simply set up a beneficial eco-system,

with edible fungi and all that.

    I still clean daily,

    enough to get by.

we have that in common. im resentful about some stuff my mom did too – especially being too clean. she never let me play video games, contact sports, and eventually blocked mtv. now i play video games (mw2) more than anybody, and work on the comp. played club lax a couple years in college (not that well). ironically, she plays games on the comp too, now.

im with u on that. hopefully the landlord wont rape u when u go to leave, it could add a considerable cost to the bunny boat.
